Background: Speedway champion Ole Olsen of Norway who rode for Coventry beat John Louis of Ioswich in a run-off at White City, London on Wednesday (5 October) to win the final meeting of the Volkswagen Grand Prix series. Olsen's win was worth GBP1,000 sterling ($1,750), plus a trophy.

SYNOPSIS: Riders had been gathering points at qualifying meetings since this Grand Prix series began on September 3rd. Fans give a worthy greeting to veteran rider Ivan Mauger, who rides for Exeter and New Zealand. In Sweden in September, Mauger had won his fifth world title.

This was the eighth heat, and Olsen, wearing No. 4, zoomed straight away into the lead. It was a lead that his rivals, who included Mauger in number 16, could not wrench from him.

The start of heat 14. Dave Jessup of reading in number 8 looked set for his third win of the evening. But, on the last lap, number 13, Gordon Kennett of White City, brilliantly cut inside him to steal the race.

This was heat 20, the last scheduled race of the evening, with Olsen once more setting the pace. If he won, there would have had to have been a run-off heat between John Louis of Ipswich and himself for first place i the series, and another between Jessup and Malcolm Simmons of Poole for third and fourth.

Olsen held his lead, then he went on to win from England international Eric Broadbent of Poole. So the run-off was needed.

Apart from the money and trophy, there were other spoils for the victor Olsen.
