    THE PRIME MINISTER OF BECHUANALAND, MR. SERETSE KHAMA, ARRIVED IN LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY) FOR INDEPENDENCE TALKS. HE IS LEADING A DELEGATION TO A CONFERENCE OPENING IN LONDON ON MONDAY UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, LORD LONGFORD.

    THE QUEEN'S COMMISSIONER IN BECHUANALAND, SIR HUGH NORMAN-WALKER, HAS ALREADY ARRIVED IN LONDON WITH AN ADVANCE PARTY FOR THE TALKS.

    MR. KHAMA WILL MAKE PROPOSALS TO THE CONFERENCE THAT BECHUANALAND SHOULD BECOME AN INDEPENDENT STATE WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH, CALLED BOTSWANA, ON SEPTEMBER 30. THERE IS NOT LIKELY TO BE ANY OBJECTION TO THE PROPOSALS AND MR. KHAMA WILL PROBABLY BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTRY AND THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME THE FIRST NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AFTER INDEPENDENCE.
