WILDMAN: "The Shah's chartered jet arrived at New York's La Guardia from Mexico City late last night. He was immediately taken to New York Hospital on Manhattan's upper east side. This morning hospital officials refused to say what was wrong with the Shah. A spokeswoman for the family would confirm only that he is undergoing tests."

CHRIS GODECK, SHAH'S SPOKESWOMAN: "He's here on the advice of his doctors to come here for an ailment he has and to have some diagnostic work done and testing.

WILDMAN: "Today a State Departmen??? source says he has cancer and a blocked bile duct, but the hospital would not confirm that. An outpatient Harvey Daniels said he saw the Shah walking in a hospital hallway."

DANIELS: "He looked tired, I mean you know thin a little drawn but very nice looking and he smiled and shook his head and then he was talking to the doctor from one treatment room to the other."

WILDMAN: "This afternoon the Shah's wife Empress Farah and his sister, left his sister's New York town house to visit him. They were accompanied by the Shah's own security guards. So far there have been no serious security problems at the hospital Diane Wildman, NBC News New York.

Background: The former Shah of Iran has undergone exploratory surgery for cancer. During the two and a half hour operation in a New York hospital doctors removed his gall bladder and several lymph nodes. The nodes, taken from his neck, will be used in test to determine the extent of Lymphoma, a form of cancer. After the operation it was revealed the Shah had been suffering from the disease for the past six years. The surgery was carried out as one of Iran's new revolutionary leaders called on Moslem in the Untied States to drag the former Monarch from his hospital bed and dismember him. The call was made by Revolutionary Court Judge, Ayatollah Sadeq Khalkhali .. the man who originally ordered a death squad to kill the deposed leader. The Shah arrived in the United States on Monday night (22 October) after flying from his home in Mexico. The NBC's Dianne Wildman reports.
