Background: NO ONE KILLED -- ONLY 11 SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES WHEN A "SEABOARD AND WESTERN" AIRLINES CARGO PLANE -- ON A PILOT TRAINING FLIGHT -- WENT OUT OF CONTROL ON TAKE-OFF, CAREENED AFIRE TWO-THOUSAND FEET AND SMASHED INTO A TRANS-CANADIAN AIRLINER, WAITING TO BE LOADED....AT IDLEWILD AIRPORT.

THE PASSENGER PLANE BLOCKED THE CARGO AIRCRAFT FROM PLOUGHING INTO THE BAGGAGE PICK-UP AREA, WHERE INSIDE. THE 2 PLANES, BLAZING SPECTACULARLY, STOPPED 20 FEET FROM THE OLD TERMINAL BUILDING. THE TERMINAL, ALWAYS CROWDED. HADONLY MINOR SCORCHING AND BROKEN WINDOWS.

IN FIVE MINUTES, THE PASSENGER PLANE WOULD HAVE BEEN LOADING 40 PASSENGERS, TWO PILOTS AND TWO STEWARDESSES, BOTH OF WHOM WERE ON THE PLANE ALONE AND FLED IN TIME, THEREBY PREVENTING - IN PART - A MAJOR DISASTER.

AIRPORT FIRE TRUCKS REACHED THE SCENE BEFORE THE FIVE CREWMEN ABOARD THE CARGO PLANE HAD OPENED THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR AND ESCAPED.

IT WAS SWIFT FIRE FIGHTING - AND - LUCKY TIMING THAT SAVED THE DAY.

AUSTIN J. TOBIN (CQ), EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE PORT OF NEW YORK AUTHORITY, VOICED THE WIDE SPREAD OPINION, "WE WERE AWFULLY LUCKY... TERRIBLY LUCKY." REASON FOR THE MISHAP IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME...AS TO A REPORT THAT A TIRE MIGHT HAVE BLOWN OUT, IT WAS CONCEDED AS A POSSIBILITY.....BUT....IT IS STILL TOO EARLY TO PIN-POINT THE CAUSE.
