  • Description

Syrian Prime Minister, Mahmoud al-Ayoubi, arrived in Vienna on Wednesday (18 September) for a three-day visit to Austria.

During his visit he is expected to sign an agreement with Austria on economic and technical co-operation.

Sadi Al-Ayoubi, accompanied by his Foreign Minister Abdel-Halim Khaddam, was welcomed by Austria's Chancellor Bruno Kriesky at Vienna's Schwechat airport.

Said Al-Ayoubi is also expected to discuss with Austrian leaders -- including President Rudolf Kirschlaeger -- the Middle East situation in general during two days in Vienna.

On Friday, the Syrian Premier is scheduled to visit Linz and surrounding areas in upper Austria before leaving for home from Horsching airport near Linz.

This visit to Austria follows a recent pattern of improving relations between Syria and the West -- especially in the commercial field. This was, perhaps, heralded by the inclusion -- for the first time since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war -- of an American pavilion at the Damascus International Trade Fair last August. More recent examples of Syria re-building trade bridges with the West was an order in early September from a British company to build a GBP13 million (about $31 million) cotton-spinning plant and an order from West Germany in late August for 575 heavy-duty lorries.
