  • Description

The Australian Navy is at present evaluating the Westland See King helicopter, and Westland Helicopters Limited of the United Kingdom are hopeful that an initial order will be placed for six of the machines.

The Sea King was developed to provide Britain's Royal Navy with an advanced anti-submarine helicopter. It combines the features of great endurance - and an air-to-surface strike capability. As a secondary rule, the Sea King can be used for search and resource, troop transport, casualty evacuation and charge carrying.

The first big order for Sea King helicopters -- a development of earlier Sikersky aircraft - come in 1967 when Britain's Royal Navy signed a GBP24 million contract.

The Sea King is powered by two Rells Reyee Bristle Gnome H.1400 turbeshaft engines.

The Westland Sea King is in service with the navies of West Germany and India - as well as Britain's Royal Navy.
