TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: PROF. MCHARDY: "WELL, FIRST OF ALL IT'S A TRANSLATION FROM THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGES. IT ISN'T REVISION MADE FROM ANY EARLIER ENGLISH VERSION. IT'S MADE FROM THE HEBREW IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, AND FROM THE GREEK AND FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT.

"REPORTER: SO THIS MAKES IT UNIQUE AS IT WERE.

PROF. MCHARDY: IT MAKES IT UNIQUE AMONG MODERN TRANSLATION. ONE MIGHT ALSO SAY OF COURSE THAT ITS MORE UP TO DATE THAN ANY OTHER VERSION PRODUCED SO FAR. WE'VE GOT THE LATEST RESULTS ON ARCHAEOLOGY, PHILOLOGY AND ALL OTHER BRANCHES OF STUDY.

SEQ. 3: SIR ARTHUR NORRINGTON: "WE WERE AIMING, I THINK AT A TRANSLATION WHICH WOULD NOT IN NAY WAY BE AFFECTED BY THE AUTHORISED VERSION, WHICH OF COURSE WE KNEW VERY WELL IN PLACES. BUT WOULD BE THE TRANSLATION THAT A MAN WRITING REASONABLY GOOD ENGLISH WOULD NOW MAKE FROM THESE DOCUMENTS IF THEY'D JUST BEEN DISCOVERED. IN OTHER WORDS PERFECTLY NATURAL ENGLISH, NOT STUDIEDLY MODERN, AND CERTAINLY TO SOME EXTENT SIMPLER THAN A SCHOLAR WOULD MAKE IT BECAUSE THE NEW ENGLISH BIBLE IS PARTICULARLY MEANT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE.

REPORTER: WHAT WERE THE MAIN DIFFICULTIES?

SIR ARTHUR: WELL, ONE BIG DIFFICULTY I'VE ALREADY HINTED AT WAS THE FACT THAT IN MANY PASSAGES ONE KNEW THE AUTHORISED VERSION, AND YOU DIDN'T WANT EITHER TO BORROW FROM IT IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOU'D BE WRITING SOMETHING UNNATURAL, NOR TO AVOID IT DELIBERATELY WHEN IT ITSELF WAS PERFECTLY MODERN ENGLISH. I THINK THE MOST DIFFICULT CASES OF ALL WHERE A PHRASE IN THE AUTHORISED VERSION HAD BECOME MODERN ENGLISH. AN EXAMPLE WAS IN JOB WHERE SOMEONE ARRIVES PANTING AND SAYS HE ALONE HAS ESCAPED BY THE SKIN OF HIS TEETH. WELL THAT IS THE BEST MODERN ENGLISH FOR A NARROW ESCAPE.

    REPORTER: DID YOU LEAVE THAT?

SIR ARTHUR: WE DIDN'T LEAVE IT IN FACT BECAUSE THE SCHOLARS TOLD US IT DIDN'T QUITE MEAN THE SKIN."

Background: THE NEW ENGLISH BIBLE WAS READ FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY CHURCHES THROUGHOUT BRITAIN TODAY (SUNDAY, MARCH 15TH). THE FULL TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE HAS TAKEN 23 YEARS TO COMPLETE AND INCLUDES THE REVISED OLD TESTAMENT.

THE NEW PUBLICATION GOES ON SALE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC TOMORROW (MONDAY) AND ITS AIM IS TO PRESENT THE BIBLE IN THE LANGUAGE OF TODAY. EVEN SOME OF THE BEST-KNOWN PSALMS HAVE UNDERGONE REVISION, INCLUDING "THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD."
THE KEY TO THE NEW BIBLE LIES IN FILES CONTAINING FORTY YEARS OF RESEARCH INTO THE EARLIEST VOCABULARIES OF THE ANCIENT BIBLICAL LANGUAGES.

WORK ON THE NEW BIBLE BEGAN IN 1946, AND THEOLOGIANS, HISTORIANS, LITERARY EXPERTS AND CHURCHMEN HAVE HELPED IN THE MASSIVE TASK OF RE-TRANSLATION.

EVEN THE NEW TESTAMENT, PUBLISHED IN 1961, HAS AGAIN BEEN REVISED. AND ALL OF BRITAIN'S MAJOR CHRISTIAN BODIES, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, HAVE BEEN INVOLVED.

TWO EXPERTS CONCERNED WITH THE TRANSLATION-PROFESSOR MCHARDY AND SIR ARTHUR NORRINGTON-WERE ASKED ABOUT THE NEW BIBLE:-
