Background: General Herbert B. Powell met yesterday (18 September) with President John F. Kennedy. General Powell, of Oregon, was appointed 6 September as U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand. The appointment was confirmed by the Senate on 9 September.
General Powell retired from active military service with the United States Army in February of this year. He has a distinguished record as a combat infantry officer. He served during World War II with the 75th Infantry Division in the Battle of the Bulge. Later, he commanded the 17th Infantry Regiment in Korea during the advance on the Yalu river. In 1956 he commanded the United States Army forces in the Pacific. He holds several decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal.
He arrives in Wellington 20 October.
