MATANO: "You know, what will happen is, the party is going to elect its president. Once that is done, our nomination, our candidate, will be the only one, and therefore we shall not have polls. Now once that is done, then he becomes the presidents of the Republic. Once he becomes the president of the Republic, then he has the powers to select his ministers, his policy advisers, everything, as President of the republic. Now, the Vice President of the party, he will also have powers to select the vice-president, his own vice-president.

Background: In Kenya, officials of the sole political party, the Kenya Africa national Union, (K.A.N.U.) are preparing for a conference of the party's delegates (6 October) in the wake of the death of President Jomo Kenyatta. The conference will formally decide his successor to the presidencies of the party and the nation. In Kenya's single party democracy, KANU's president is also President of Kenya. There have been many expressions of loyalty to Acting President Daniel Arap Moi. One senior party official, Mr. Robert Matano, says he is unlikely to be challenged for the presidential posts. Acting President Moi's supporters include the Cabinet Ministers and religious leaders, and two men who had been tipped to aspire to the presidency, the Minister of State, Mr. Mbiyu Koinange, and the Nairobi branch chairman of KANU, Dr. Njoroge Mungai.
