In Kenya, officials of the sole political party, the Kenya Africa national Union, (K.A.N.U.) are preparing for a conference of the party's delegates (6 October) in the wake of the death of President Jomo Kenyatta. The conference will formally decide his successor to the presidencies of the party and the nation. In Kenya's single party democracy, KANU's president is also President of Kenya. There have been many expressions of loyalty to Acting President Daniel Arap Moi. One senior party official, Mr. Robert Matano, says he is unlikely to be challenged for the presidential posts. Acting President Moi's supporters include the Cabinet Ministers and religious leaders, and two men who had been tipped to aspire to the presidency, the Minister of State, Mr. Mbiyu Koinange, and the Nairobi branch chairman of KANU, Dr. Njoroge Mungai.
