  • Description

Holland cruised to a 4-0 win over Argentina in their Group "A" World Cup match in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night (26 June).

Holland overran the Argentines, inspired by their captain, Johan Cruyff, who rounded off the evening with two goals -- the second scored from almost the last kick of the match.

Cruyff gave his team the lead with a goal ten minutes after the start of play. Running clear in front of the Argentine goal, Cruyff easily beat goalkeeper Daniel Carnivali to make his shot.

Fifteen minutes later, after a series of unsuccessful attacks on the Argentine goalmouth, Holland's Ruud Krol hit home the second goal with a long shot that whistled through the Argentine defence.

A thunderstorm drenched the stadium in the second half and the third goal came when Cruyff hit a sodden ball across the goalmouth and Johnny Rep -- Holland's top scorer -- headed it through.

Cruyff's two goals -- the first and the last of the match -- were his first of the World Cup tournament. He lived up to his reputation of being pele's successor as the world's number one player.

The game was marred by frequent fouls and a number of injuries. Argentina's Enrigue Wolff, hurt at the end of the first half, did not reappear for the second half and Roberto Telch was taken off on a stretcher after falling heavily in his own goalmouth. Another Argentine, Rene Houseman, was also replaced.

The Dutch turned on the most impressive performance of the opening matches of the second-final round and looked like strong contenders for the Cup.
