  • Description

A CROWDED MEETING IN ATHENS ON THURSDAY HEARD ARCHBISHOP CHRYSSOSTOMOS, LEADER OF THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH, APPEAL TO THE UNITED NATIONS TO USE TO USE THE PRINCIPLE OF SELF-DETERMINATION TO SETTLE THE CRISIS IN CYPRUS.

AMONG THE AUDIENCE AT THE MEETING WAS GENERAL GEORGE GRIVAS, THE FORMER EOKA LEADER. MEMBERS OF THE GREEK GOVERNMENT, LOCAL OFFICIALS AND UNIVERSITY STAFF WERE ALSO PRESENT.

ARCHBISHOP CHRYSSOSTOMOS IS PRESIDENT OF THE NEW "SELF-DETERMINATION FOR CYPRUS COMMITTEE". HE APPEALED TO ALL CHRISTIAN CHURCHES FOR ASSISTANCE AND SUPPORT.

ANOTHER SPEAKER AT THE MEETING WAS MR. SAVVAS LOIZIDES, CYPRUS ETHNARCHIC COUNCILLOR. HE ALSO GAVE SUPPORT TO THE IDEA OF SELF-DETERMINATION AS A MEANS OF BRINGING PEACE TO THE ISLAND.

MEANWHILE TENSION HAS BEEN INCREASING IN CYPRUS. ON SATURDAY IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT CYPRUS GOVERNMENT FORCES HAD BEEN PLACED ON FULL ALERT FOLLOWING REPORTS OF TURKISH MILITARY MOVES ON THE SOUTH COAST OF TURKEY. THESE REPORTS LED TO FEARS OF AN INVASION OF THE ISLAND. GREEK ARMED FORCES WERE ALSO ORDERED TO STAND-BY.

ON FRIDAY, ORDERS WENT OUT TO NEARLY 10,000 BRITISH SERVICEMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN CYPRUS TO STAY IN THEIR BASE AREAS TO MINIMISE THE POSSIBILITY OF FURTHER SEARCHING INCIDENTS AT GREEK-CYPRIOT POLICE ROAD BLOCKS. THIS FOLLOWS NEW COMPLAINTS FROM BRITISH FAMILIES ABOUT THEIR TREATMENT AT NUMEROUS ROAD BLOCKS.
