  • Description

In France, angry steelworkers have clashed with riot police during a demonstration against mounting unemployment. The clashes broke out on Friday (9 February), when police tried to stop the protestors from using forty buses to block traffic on the main Paris to Brussels motorway, Thirty six police were injured -- thirty-five of them riot policemen.

SYNOPSIS: The trouble began while the steelworkers were returning to Northern France after a protest march in the French capital. The workers drove their forty buses at a snail's pace on a motorway twenty-six kilometres (16 miles) from Paris, causing huge traffic jams.

This protest was the latest in a series of outbursts by workers against spiralling unemployment in France. Worst hit is the steel industry, where twenty-one thousand are due to lose their jobs by the end of the year.

This march later developed into a pitched battle, when riot police moved in to clear the motorway. The two thousand five hundred workers responded by hurling bricks and stones. A national steel strike is now planned for Friday (16 February).
