    THE "FRANCE", WHOSE KEEL WAS LAID IN ST. NAZAIRE JUST OVER FOUR YEARS AGO, IS THE LONGEST LINER IN THE WORLD: 1,035-FEET - OR FOUR FEET LONGER THAN THE "QUEEN ELIZABETH". HER SEA TRIALS WILL TAKE HER AROUND THE WIND-SWEPT BELLE-ILE, AND THEN SHE WILL RETURN TO LE HAVRE FOR COMPLETION OF INTERIOR FITTINGS BEFORE HER MAIDEN VOYAGE TO NEW YORK VIA SOUTHAMPTON ON FEBRUARY 3. 1962. HOWEVER, BEFORE THE SCHEDULED MAIDEN VOYAGE, THE "FRANCE" WILL MAKE A "WORLD PREMIERE" CRUISE TO THE CANARY ISLANDS ON JANUARY 19.

    BUILT AT A COST OF ABOUT GBP23 MILLION - MOSTLY GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY - THE LINER'S 160,000 HORSE-POWER ENGINES CAN CARRY HER 2,000 PASSENGERS - 500 FIRST CLASS AND 1,500 TOURIST - AT A MAXIMUM SPEED OF 34 KNOTS. HER HULL HAS BEEN SO DESIGNED THAT HER ENGINES CAN BE REPLACED BY AN ATOMIC PROPULSION UNIT.
