Background: The association of Maseratis and Monaco bring to mind the famous, earshattering round-the-houses motor race of the Principality; but last weekend (March 30-32), the bay of Monte Carlo roared to a different Maserati melody as Liborio Guidotti skimmed over the Mediterranean waters in a powerful Maserati-engined racing boat. Brother Giorgio was at the wheel of another craft powered with a Ferrari engine - another name associated with motor-racing. They and other intrepid racing boatmen brought to a climax, Monte-Carlos's spectacular international motor-boat racing championships. For these were the most powerful craft of the championships , but there was plenty of excitement, too, from the smaller 'hydroplane' type boats, propelled by high-efficiency outboard motors. And if you were a 'club' boatman, there was nothing to stop you entering in the 'runabout' section....and from the amount of spray and 'kangarooing' these craft displayed, even that was a hair-raising occupation. France and Italy provided most of the winners...these two countries gave been longest in the sport. But Tobert of Britain carried off the prize for the 350 cc outboard class.
