  • Description

The South American city of Buenos Aires in Argentina has become the focus for the chess players of the world with an unusual development in the World Chess Olympiad. For the first time, the Soviet Union is being challenged by the United States. After play on Wednesday (November 8) the United States had established a narrow lead over the Soviet Union which has tied in second place with Hungary. There were two rounds to go with five games adjourned. But there was another reason for chess interest in Buenos Aires.

SYNOPSIS: On Tuesday (November 7) the World Chess Federation began its meeting and the main subject was the recent controversial World Championship played in Baguio City in the Philippines between the challenger Viktor Korchnoi, a Soviet defector, and World Champion, Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union. The series was won by Karoov 6-5 in an extended championship contest which lasted for three months. However, the tournament was wrecked with complaints and allegations of unfair tactics from 2 both sides.

Korchnoi lives in Switzerland now, and the Swiss Chess Federation urged that his complaints be put on the World Chess Federation's Agenda. It said the Congress should consider awarding the final game to Korchnoi on the grounds that the Soviet delegation at the Championships had broken the rules.

Before the Congress got around to discussing the matter, the Nigerian delegate, Dr. S. O. Ebigwei, called for the admission of Uganda to the Federation, together with Mauritius, Gambia, Mali and the Seychelles. They were subsequently admitted, together with Sri Lanka.

There were also an election for a successor to Dr. Max Euwe of Holland as President of the Federation. The delegate from the Libyan Jamahiriyah was another to speak in favour of Uganda's admission. But the main day's business was the World Championship. Korchnoi's objections included the expulsion of two of his friends from the Championship city of Baguio and that an unofficial member of the Soviet delegation had sat close to the contestants. Korchnoi claimed the unofficial member was a parapsychologist who was trying to hypnotise him. His two friends who were expelled were members of the Ananda Marga sect, a religious group.

The Swiss Chess Federation wants Karpov to be stripped of his title and the final controversial game replayed. It says the Championship series should resume with the score at five games all. The Congress ends on Saturday (November 11).
