Background: THE "CITY OF LONDON" PAVILION, CENTRE-PIECE OF THE "BRITAIN '66" EXHIBITION IN OSLO, NORWAY, WHICH IS DUE TO OPEN ON 29 APRIL, WAS BURNED OUT EARLY TODAY (SATURDAY). ONLY THE STEEL CONSTRUCTION OF THE BUILDING WAS LEFT STANDING.

THE CANVAS-COVERED PAVILION, IN THE CENTRE OF OSLO, WAS TO HAVE BEEN THE HUB OF CEREMONIES AT THE OPENING OF THE "BRITAIN '66" EXHIBITION AND THE BRITISH FORTNIGHT. IT WAS ALMOST COMPLETED, WITH ELECTRICITY CONNECTED AND SWITCHED ON.

THE PAVILION STOOD BETWEEN A PARK SURROUNDING THE ROYAL PALACE AND THE FOREIGN MINISTRY.

FAMLES FROM THE HUGE BLAZE LIT UP MOST OF THE CITY CENTRE AND FIREMEN CONCENTRATED ON PREVENTING THE FIRE SPREADING TO THE MINISTRY BUILDING. THE CIRCULAR PAVILION, WHICH COST ABOUT GBP40,000 STERLING, WAS TO HAVE DISPLAYED SERVICES OFFERED BY THE CITY OF LONDON. IT WAS DESTROYED IN TEN MINUTES.

OSLO POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE BLAZE, THOUGH IT IS BELIEVED THAT IT STARTED WITH A SHORT CIRCUIT.

HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NUMBER OF CASES OF ARSON IN THE CITY IN RECENT MONTHS. AND THERE HAS ALSO BEEN SOME ANTI-BRITISH FEELING, CAUSED BY DISSATISFACTION WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S SURCHARGE ON IMPORTED GOOD.

IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO BUILD A TEMPORARY FLOOR AND DOME ON TO THE REMAINS OF THE BURNED OUT STRUCTURE SO THAT THE SHOW CAN STILL GO ON.
