  • Description

In Saigon on Monday (9 July), spectators were treated to a different kind of military activity when a performing marching team from the Taiwanese navy put on a demonstration of precision marching.

The visitors were from Taiwanese war ships which were in South Vietnam on a two-day good-will visit.

Saigon's Mayor, General Do Kien Nhieu, and Taiwanese Rear Admiral Shen To took the salute from the navy band as the crowds leaned forward to watch the marching drill.

The Taiwanese sailors, in their smart white uniforms, performed tricks with their ceremonial rifles during their marching display. They went through drills which included reverse pattern stepping and quick-change marching for the crowd.

When the static display had finished, they marched down one of the city's main streets accompanied by the ships' bands.

It was a rare treat for people who are normally accustomed to see troops on full battle alert.
