  • Description

General Jorge Rafael Videla, Army Chief of Staff, was sworn in as Argentina's eighth soldier-president in just over 30 years in Buenos Aires, on Monday (29 March).

The 50-year-old general was a member of the three main military junta which overthrew the government of President Maria Estela Peron and took power on 24 March.

The new president took the oath of office in a brief and simple ceremony in the Casa Rosada, the pink painted government house in central Buenos Aires.

A cabinet of six military colleagues and two civilians, named on Sunday night (28 March), was also sworn in at the ceremony. The military men are Admiral Jorge Emilio Massera, Brigadier General Orlando Agosti, General Albano Harguindeguy, Rear Admiral Cesar Guzzetti, Brigadier Julio Gomez and Brigadier Luis Maria Klix.

The civilians are wealthy businessman and landowner, Senor Jose Martinez de Hoz, who takes over the key economy ministry and a mathematics professor, Dr. Ricardo Bruera, as Minister of Education.

Senora Peron, under house arrest at the winter resort of El Messidor in the foothills of the Andes, is quoted by Reuters as having told churchmen who visited her that she is penniless and does not want to be expelled from Argentina.
