    TWO OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE'S LARGEST HELICOPTERS - THE TWIN-ROTOR BELVEDERE - ARRIVED ON FRIDAY NIGHT (1 MARCH) AFTER FLYING 4,260 MILES FROM BRITAIN.THE FLIGHT IS CLAIMED TO BE A RECORD DISTANCE FOR ANY HELICOPTER OF ANY FORCE IN THE WORLD, BEATING A PREVIOUS AMERICAN FLIGHT BY ABOUT 1,200 MILES.

    BOTH BELVEDERES, WITH A CRUISING SPEED OF 138 MILES AN HOUR, CAME FROM 26 SQUADRON BASED AT ODIHAM, HAMPSHIRE, U.K.FLYING IN 300-MILE "HOPS", THEY FLEW BY WAY OF FRANCE, ITALY, GREECE, AND CRETE TO EL ADEM IN LIBYA WHERE THEY TOOK PART IN AN EXERCISE.FROM EL ADEM THEY FLEW ACROSS THE DESERT PART IN WADI HALFA IN THE SUDAN, PICKING UP FUEL AT OIL STATIONS AND ISOLATED ARMY CAMPS ON THE WAY.

    ARRIVING AT ADEN AFTER DARK, THE TWO HELICOPTERS FLEW OVER THE DISTRICT NEXT DAY ON DISPLAY.THEY'LL NOW BE USED FOR LOCAL TRANSPORT, CARRYING UP TO 18 PEOPLE.
