Background: K.Schranz, of Australia, won of the men's giant slalom in the international Hahnemkamm skiing races Jan.15, with a time of 1 min. 30.2 secs. narrowly beating H.P.Lanig and F. Wagnerberger, both a West Germany, with a time of 1 min. 31 sec. P. Stiegler, of Australia, was fourth, a further second behind.
Because of the soft conditions on the first half of the course, which soon became rutted, exposing ice, start numbers played an important part: these four started in the first five.
Others among the 118 starters were: Willy Forrer, Switzerland, and Francois Bonlieu, France.
