VISNEWS filmed President Charles de Gaulle of France Feb 14 when he arrived at Toulouse on his first official tour since he became President. As the General with his wife and three ministers, drove through the suburbs, the few people lining the streets were silent. At one point a paving stone, wrapped in a newspaper, was thrown and fell into the roadway behind him.
After laying a wreath at the war memorial the President walked to the Prefecture, passing from pavement to pavement shaking hands. The shouts of acclaim became louder. In the main square about 20,000 people gave him a rousing reception.
Former French settlers from Algeria now live in Toulouse, which has become a centre of Right-Wing, including extremists, opinion. One of the main ex-Servicemen unions and local associations of ex-Resistance members, deportees, and war widows boycotted the war memorial ceremony in protest at the abolition of their pensions in the December budget.
