Background: The East German athletics star, Marita Koch, for the sixth time, smashed her own world record when she ran the 400 metres in 48.15 seconds on the third day of the European Athletic Championships (September 8) in Athens. But the shock of the day came later when the West German Hans-Peter Ferner stole the 800 metres from Sebastian Coe of Great Britain. The west German overtook the British runner 40 metres for the tape and won the race in 1.46.3--four seconds slower than Coe's world record time. Thousands of sports fans who paced the stands of the Olympic Stadium were stunned by the result. Sebastian Coe couldn't believe it either.
