  • Description

The South West African People's organisation - a resistance movement against South African control of the territory - staged a rally in the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam on Wednesday (26 August). The President of the organisation, Mr. Sam Nujoma, addressed the rally and alleged that the United States was supplying South Africa with jet fighters through Italy.

The resistance organisation, known as SWAPO, held the meeting at the headquarters of the Tanu youth league and entertainment was provided by tribal dancers and musicians. Among the speakers was the North Vietnamese Ambassador.

The SWAPO President, Mr. Nujoma told the rally that blueprints of Lockheed F-104 jet fighters had been sent to the Fiat plant in Turin where the aircraft were manufactured. Mr. Nujoma then alleged that the aircraft were delivered to South Africa.

Commenting on the resistance movement in South West Africa, Mr. Nujoma said that South Africa had resorted to repressive measures including poisoning water in dams, burning crops, and torturing prisoners.

Other speakers at the rally included a representative of the Zambian High Commission and a member of the African National Congress.
