An impressive USSR side defeated Finland 3-1 on May 15 in a friendly at Kouvola in Finland. The Soviet team was warming up for the European championships in France next month (June). Finland has not qualified but were also warming up for the World Cup qualifying games starting next season. The strong Soviet side had an easy first half with goals scored by Sergei Rodionov, and then, after a corner by Viktor Gratshev from a header by Aleksandr Tshivadze. Finland fought back in the second half with an attack from the right. The USSR keeper saved the first shot but Jari Rantanen scored from the rebound. Then, with just a few seconds of the match left, the Soviet team attacked and Oleg Protason made it 3-1 after the Finish goalkeeper let a cross-shot slip from his grasp.
