  • Description

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto unveiled a memorial to the founder of the Turkish Republic, Kemal Ataturk, on Friday (November 30) in Larkana, Sind Province. It marked the Turkish Republic's fiftieth anniversary.

The twin towers on the 82 foot (25 metres) monument represent Turkey and Pakistan. They are linked to represent the friendship between the two countries.

Mr. Bhutto suggested the memorial be built shortly after the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. At Friday's opening ceremony he said the memorial expressed the admiration Pakistani people have for Kemal Ataturk.

Turkey was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Ilhan Oztrak. Mr. Oztrak said the memorial was the first to Ataturk outside Turkey, and it showed the deep historical ties between Turkey and Pakistan.
