  • Description

A large crowd turned out to watch the Philippines Open Golf Championship in Manila.

The eventual winner, Taiwanese champion, Hsieh Yung-yo, began brilliantly but was quickly put underpressure by fellow country-men, Kuo Chie-hsiung, and Hsieh Min-nan.

Hsieh Min-nan remained a constant threat for the title but crashed on the sixteenth hole with a triple bogey.

Even the winner, Hsieh, shot one-over par for the final round but managed to finish with a final score of two-hundred-and-eighty-one, seven-under par. The Taiwanese players appeared to be able to handle the slow greens much better than the other competitors.

Kuo Chie-hsiung carded a final round of seventy-three to tie second place with Min-nan, both of whom finished on two-hundred-and-eighty-six.

Australian Ted Ball came in third on two-hundred-and-eighty-eight.

Hsieh Yung-yo received one-hundred-thousand U.S. Dollars for his efforts and gained leading place in the Asian Golf Championship, of which the Philippines Open was the first leg.

The players will now go on to the second leg of the Championship, the Hong Kong Open, due to begin on 24th February.
