  • Description

IN AMMAN, ABOUT 6,000 JORDANIAN WOMEN HAVE PROTESTED THE ARREST OF ARAB WOMEN DEMONSTRATORS IN JERUSALEM. THEY MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY CHANTING SLOGANS AND WEEPING.

THE WOMEN WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ARREST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS AND ISRAEL'S INTENTION TO HOLD AN INDEPENDENCE DAY MILITARY PARADE ON THURSDAY. THEY MARCHED TO THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING AND THERE THEY PRESENTED A PETITION TO THE UNITED NATIONS' SPECIAL ENVOY TO THE MIDDLE EAST, GUNNAR JARRING.

HE HAD COME TO AMMAN FOR TALKS WITH GOVERNMENT MINISTERS AND OFFICIALS AND MET WITH THE WOMEN. THE ENVOY PROMISED THE DEMONSTRATORS THAT HE WOULD SEND THEIR PETITION TO THOSE AT THE UNITED NATIONS THAT HE THOUGHT COMPETENT TO RECEIVE IT.
