  • Description

The four ultra-orthodox Agudat Israel members in the Knesset cashed in one the coalition agreement: Do away with the recruiting boards and simply have a girl announce that she cannot serve on religious grounds and grounds of conscience and that will guarantee her freedom. The suggested amendment to the call-up law as proposed raised a storm both inside the House and on the outside and today's protest by 8th grade girls was just one manifestation of this ongoing protests. Most of the girls consider their service in the army not only a duty but also a right but they protest the preferential treatment of girls from religious families, some of whom could use the new form of the law to simply shirk army service and they demand that those girls who refuse to serve in the IDF do at least an equal two years of National service in hospitals, kindergartens or with new immigrants a compromise, which will satisfy both sides but outside the governmental corridors the protests are growing louder.
