  • Description

A solemn funeral procession wended its way through Kuala Lumpur September 3...the last journey of Malaya's late paramount ruler, Sir Hisamuddin, who died Sept 1. The royal coffin, on its way to the royal mausoleum at Klang, some miles from Kuala Lumpur, was borne on a gun-carriage drawn by ratings of the Royal Malayan Navy.

Deputy paramount ruler Sir Putra, Sultans of all Malay States, the Sultan of Brunei, and Singapore's Head of State, Inche Yusof Ishak, walked behind the royal coffin. Then came prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and Malaya's Cabinet Ministers, Diplomatic Corps and officials.

The entire route was lined by mourners who had waited since early morning to witness the last journey of the late ruler.

Contingents from Commonwealth forces stationed in Malaya - British, Australian and New Zealanders - formed part of the funeral procession. Aircraft of the Royal Malayan Air Force, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force staged a flypast.

The King was buried at the royal mausoleum beside his father's grave.
