  • Description

THE SALISBURY POLICE TODAY (FRIDAY) BANNED ALL MEETINGS AT THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF RHODESIA FOLLOWING THREE DAYS OF STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS THERE AGAINST RHODESIA'S SEIZURE OF INDEPENDENCE. THE FIRST DEMONSTRATIONS ON WEDNESDAY WERE FOLLOWED BY A COMPLETE BOYCOTT BY AFRICAN STUDENTS OF THE LECTURES.

THE MULTI-RACIAL UNIVERSITY COLLEGE IS SITUATED ON A SPRAWLING CAMPUS ABOUT FOUR MILES FROM THE CENTRE OF SALISBURY. WEDNESDAY'S DEMONSTRATION BEGAN WITH A GROUP OF STUDENTS - MOSTLY AFRICANS - GATHERING OUTSIDE THE OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL, DR. WALTER ADAMS. THEY SHOUTED "ADAMS IS A FASCIST" AND OTHER SLOGANS AGAINST THE PRINCIPAL AND AGAINST RHODESIA'S SEIZURE OF INDEPENDENCE.

MR. ADAMS CAME OUT OF HIS OFFICE AND THREATENED TO CALL THE POLICE IF THE STUDENTS DID NOT DISPERSE. HOWEVER, THE DEMONSTRATIONS CONTINUED AND WERE RENEWED OVER THE FOLLOWING TWO DAYS. THE STUDENTS WANT THE COLLEGE TO MAKE A PUBLIC STATEMENT AGAINST THE UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE MADE BY THE REGIME OF MR. IAN SMITH LAST NOVEMBER. ALTHOUGH THE COLLEGE HAS NOT DONE THIS, 30 OF THE TEACHERS HAVE EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR THE STUDENTS.
