  • Description

A fire in Montreal's underground railway system on Friday (10 December) killed one man and injured more than 15 firemen.

The fire began after two trains -- one crowded with passengers -- collided. All subway workers were brought to the surface, and although some were suffering from shock and others had been overcome by smoke, there were no reports o serious injury.

Tons of water were flooded into the tunnel in an effort to extinguish the blaze, and a later explosion caught firemen unawares -- they were rushed to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

SYNOPSIS: A train driver was killed in Montreal on Friday when two underground passenger trains collided. An explosion soon afterwards started a fire and thick smoke impeded rescue workers.

All subway workers, some suffering from shock and a few who had been overcome by smoke, were brought to the surface. But a second explosion from the burning trains caught firemen unawares, and more than 15 of them had to be rushed to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and burns. The damage to the underground system has been estimated to run as high as five million dollars, and the trains were still burning after 20 hours.

Conditions underground were hampered by thick smoke, and only rescue workers wearing oxygen tanks were able to go down. Most of their tanks lasted only 30 minutes, and it took that time to walk along the tunnel to the scene of the crash. Tons of water were flooded into the tunnel to extinguish the blaze. City officials were investigating the cause of the collision as the firemen continued to fight the blaze. The clean-up operations are estimated to take some days -- the water used to flood the tunnel has to be pumped out and the wreckage has to be removed. Officials say this will add to the cost of the accident.
