    Eight people have died so far and others are missing in the worst floods for 30 years in eastern Australia.

    More than a million square miles are under water in central New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia. Some areas had more than eleven inches of rain between January 7 and January 9.

    Hundreds of people in the eastern states have been evacuated as the rains washed eastwards, flooding rivers, cutting road and rail links and ruining crops.

    Royal Australian Air Force helicopters have been ferrying food and injured in New South Wales where civil defence authorities have described the position around Narrabri and Tamworth as 'grim'.

    The entire cotton crop of New South Wales has been destroyed. The floods have drowned thousands of sheep and caused millions of dollars worth of damage to property.

    SYNOPSIS: In ordered Australia eight people have died so far and others are missing in the worst floods for thirty years. More than a million square miles are under water in central New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia. Some areas had more than eleven inches of rain in two days.

    Civil defence authorities have described this area around Narrabri and Tamworth as grim. Hundreds of people have been evacuated as the rains wash eastwards, swelling rivers over their banks and cutting off many towns. The entire cotton group of New South Wales has been destroyed.

    The floods have done millions of dollars worth of damage to property. Police are on the lookout for looters who are taking advantage of the many abandoned homes.

    Outbreaks of gastroenteritis have been reported as water supplies become polluted. Hundreds of motorists are ???anded along roads that disappear under several feet of water, and the floods have drowned thousands of sheep.

    Emergency services in New South Wales have been in full operation. Royal Australian Air Force helicopters and Hercules transport planes have been flying food to cut off households and ferrying the injured.
