  • Description

FORTY-THREE OFFICERS OF THE THAI BLACK PANTHER DIVISION WHO HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM THEIR TOUR OF DUTY IN THE VIETNAM CONFLICT WERE ORDAINED BUDDHIST PRIESTS AT A THREE-DAY CEREMONY IN BANGKOK THIS WEEK. A TOTAL OF 138 OFFICERS WERE ORDAINED INTO THE BUDDHIST PRIESTHOOD AT CEREMONIES IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE COUNTRY AT THE SAME TIME..... ALL IN ORDER TO GIVE THANKS FOR THEIR SAFE RETURN TO THEIR HOMES AND TO ATONE FOR "SINS", SUCH ADS KILLING, WHICH THEY COMMITTED DURING THEIR TOUR OF DUTY.

THE THREE-DAY CEREMONY BEGAN ON FRIDAY WITH THE SHAVING OF THE OFFICERS' HEADS, PRESIDED OVER BY THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE PANTHERS' DIVISION, AND THE BUDDHAMONT OF WAT SUTAS.

RELATIVES ALSO SNIPPED LOCKS OF HAIR FROM THE SOLDIERS' HEADS.

THE CEREMONIES ENDED YESTERDAY WITH CELEBRATIONS.

ACCORDING TO THAI TRADITION, MEN WHO RETURN FROM A WAR MUST BE ORDAINED OR DO SOME MERITORIOUS TASK BECAUSE THEY PRAYED FOR THEIR SAFE RETURN BEFORE LEAVING FOR BATTLE. THEY ALSO HAVE TO CLEANSE THEMSELVES FOR COMMITTING "SINS" DURING BATTLE.....SUCH AS KILLING THEIR ENEMIES.
