Background: On March 7, 1966, when the French Government requested that all U. S. forces vacate France by April 1, 1967, there were approximately 770,000 tons of U. S. military supplies valued at about $880 million in France.

It has been estimated that the stocks on hand when the request to vacate was received would have filled more than 50,000 rail cars, making a train stretching roughly the distance from Paris to Stuttgart, Germany, the relocation site for the Headquarters of the U. S. European Command.

The movement of families to France was halted on August 1, 1966. Replacements for military personnel who have completed tours in France are now being ordered to relocation sites of their units.

This film shows Army personnel and French civilian personnel clearing and closing various bases in western France, including facilities at Ingiandes, Saumur, Chize, Vatry, Chino and Vitry.
