Background: The Southampton Castle left for her maiden voyage to Cape Town today. She's been in the docks for several days now and her last load of cargo was hoisted aboard this morning. She's the most powerful diesel cargo liner afloat. And her two giant engines develop nearly 35,000 brake horse power. She's primarily intended to take her place in the South African mail service, and after it ??? run, she'll do the trip in 11 1/2 days.

Captain Freer will carry no passengers aboard the Southampton Castle. He'll take only cargo and crew. He has the most luxurious quarters on the ship. But that's not to say that the other officers and crew are hard done by. Each one of them has his own cabin - superbly fitted out.

The crew has no leisure time problems. Pop music can be relayed to almost all parts of the ship. But this isn't all. There's hobbies room for the wood-work enthusiasts and for the outdoor types there's even swimming pool.

Today was the first time the Southampton Castle set sail for South Africa. This time she'll do the voyage in 13 1/2 days. But before she sails again the Windsor Castle will have inaugurated a faster schedule, and the next trip will be two days less.

She'll carry everything from medicine to machinery - even 60,000 gallons of wine which'll be pumped straight into tanks in South Africa and then off again when the ship returns to England where'll it'll be blended.
