In a small village south of Da Nang, South Vietnam, a platoon of U.S. Marines?

  • Description

In a small village south of Da Nang, South Vietnam, a platoon of U.S. Marines puts into practice a new concept in the pacification program that is designed to bring security and peace to residents of this area. The program is know as the "Combined Action Platoon."
This lookout tower is a new symbol of security from the Vietcong as it is the centrepiece from which the village is made secure. The Marines first job is make the area secure from day and night VC attack. In making the village secure the GI's also gradually train the villagers to fend for themselves.

A vital part of CAP is for the U.S. forces to live among the villagers until they are strong enough to defend their own village. Security is not the only job however, as the Marines dispense some medical aid and sanitation advice to the people. In this close association with the villagers a mutual trust is established and the threat of another Vietcong-controlled village is removed.
