SYNOPSIS: War-torn Cambodia is to hold elections for a new National Assembly as soon as possible. This was announced in Phnom Penh on Saturday by the country's effective leader, Deputy Premier Sirik Matak.

General Sirik Matak was speaking in the garden of the ailing Prime Minister, Marshal Lon Nol, whose cabinet had been presented to him earlier. It was Marshal Lon Nol's first public appearance since his return from Hawaii...where he had been recuperating from a stroke suffered in early February.

Newsmen, who had been invited into the garden by the Marshal, were told that the new cabinet--endorsed by the National Assembly on Thursday--was dedicated towards the same goal as the old one...strengthening the country. Marshal Lon Nol, his speech impaired by his stroke, had to speak first the his Deputy Premier, who in turn spoke through an interpreter.

General Sirik Matak said that the Ministry of the Interior would shortly make a survey to see whether it was possible to hold elections for the new National Assembly. Marshal Lon Nol had said earlier in a statement to his people that the most important point concerning the new Government would be for Cambodia to have a programme for general mobilisation.
