  • Description

THE UNITED STATES HAS AUTHORISED THE EVACUATION OF AMERICANS ON CYPRUS FOLLOWING THE BOMBING IN NICOSIA LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY) OF THE U.S. EMBASSY. TWO BOMBS EXPLODED AT THE REAR OF THE BUILDING. NO-ONE WAS INJURED. PRESIDENT MAKARIOS LATER DESCRIBED THE EXPLOSIONS AS "ABOMINABLE" AND CALLED THE PERPETRATORS "TRAITORS".

LAST NIGHT'S BOMBINGS IN CYPRUS, WHICH ALSO INCLUDED AN ATTACK ON AN HOTEL MAINLY OCCUPIED BY BRITISHERS, ENDED A DAY IN WHICH THE SITUATION ON THE ISLAND CONTINUED TO DETERIORATE. TENSION BETWEEN THE TWO RACES, GREEK AND TURK, IS GROWING WHILE EMOTIONS ARE RUNNING HIGH OVER THE PROPOSED N.A.T.O. FORCE TO KEEP THE PEACE. PRESIDENT MAKARIOS HAS ACCEPTED THE PLAN IN PRINCIPLE BUT WANTS IT LINKED TO THE U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL.

(IN NICOSIA YESTERDAY BRITISH TROOPS AGAIN MANNED THE CEASEFIRE LINE THROUGH THE CITY FOR A 12-MINUTE PRECAUTIONARY ALERT, BUT LATER STOOD DOWN. ROADBLOCKS STAYED MANNED.)
