  • Description

NEARLY 1,300 RHODESIAN OF ALL RACES ATTENDED A MEETING IN SALISBURY LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE IAN SMITH REGIME'S PROPOSED NEW LAW TO ENABLE WHITES TO FORCE THE EVICTION OF NON-WHITES IN THEIR RESIDENTIAL AREA. THE MEETING --- MAINLY OF PEOPLE OF ASIAN DESCENT AND SO-CALLED "COLOUREDS" -- CALLED FOR A MASSIVE DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT AND THE RESIGNATION OF MR IAN SMITH.

EVER SINCE RHODESIA ILLEGALLY SEIZED INDEPENDENCE IN 1965, THE WHITE MINORITY REGIME HAS FREQUENTLY SPOKEN OF THE DESIRABILITY OF SOME FORM OF SEPARATE RACIAL DEVELOPMENT, SUCH AS EXISTS IN SOUTH AFRICA UNDER THE APARTHEID LAWS. AFRICANS ARE ALREADY PREVENTED FROM ACQUIRING PROPERTY IN WHITE AREAS. THE NEW LAWS WOULD MOSTLY AFFECT RHODESIA'S 14,000 "COLOUREDS" (MIXED RACE) AND 8,000 ASIANS.

THE MEMBER OF THE SMITH REGIME RESPONSIBLE FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT, MR MARK PARTRIDGE, ANNOUNCED THE PLANNED LEGISLATION IN PARLIAMENT AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS MONTH. IT WOULD ENABLE ANY GIVEN RESIDENTIAL AREA TO PETITION FOR THE AREA TO BE RESTRICTED TO ONE RACE. AT LAST NIGHT'S MEETING AT THE COMMUNITY CENTRE IN THE ARCADIA AREA OF SALISBURY, THE PROPOSED LEGISLATION WAS STRONGLY DEPLORED AS BOUND TO LEAD TO HARDSHIP, INJUSTICES AND RESENTMENT, AND THOSE PRESENT PLEDGED TO OPPOSE IT "BY ALL LAWFUL MEANS".

A RESOLUTION PASSED BY A SHOW OF HANDS SAID, IN PART, THAT THOSE PRESENT KNEW OF NO FRICTION ARISING FROM PEOPLE OF ONE RACE LIVING IN AN AREA PREDOMINANTLY OCCUPIED BY PEOPLE OF ANOTHER RACE. EACH OF THE FOUR MAIN SPEAKERS, WHICH INCLUDED A WOMAN, MRS E. RAWSON, RECEIVED STRONG APPLAUSE. THE TWO MEMBERS OF THE RULING RHODESIAN FRONT WHOSE CONSTITUENCIES TAKE IN THE ARCADIA AREA WERE CRITICISED FOR NOT ATTENDING. THE MEETING EXPRESSED THEIR "HEARTFELT WISH TO DWELL IN AMITY AND PEACE" WITH THEIR FELLOW RHODESIANS "OF WHATEVER COLOUR AND CREED."
(THE RHODESIAN CONSTITUTIONAL ASSOCIATION -- A NON-PARTY ORGANISATION COMPOSED MAINLY OF MEMBERS OF THE FORMER UNITED FEDERAL AND UNITED RHODESIAN PARTIES -- RECENTLY ATTACKED THE PROPOSED NEW LEGISLATION AS REPUGNANT, FLAGRANT INTERFERENCE WITH INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, AND LEGALLY AND CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONABLE.)
