  • Description

A small explosive device shattered windows in the Soviet Embassy in Washington yesterday (Friday) in what is seen as another anti-Soviet action by militant Jewish organisations. The explosion appears likely to increase the tension between Moscow and Washington which these incidents have generated.

At the time of the explosion an unidentified woman rang a news agency and said that the action was a sample of things to come. She then said "Let our people go".

According to the Washington Police Department a pipe bomb was placed against an iron gate leading to a courtyard of the Russian Embassy's Cultural Building. Several windows in the building were shattered but there were no injuries. Jewish groups such as the Jewish Defence League have carried out a series of demonstrations and protest actions in the United States in recent months demanding that Moscow grant visas to Jews who want to migrate to Israel. There have also been protests about Soviet trials of Jewish citizens.
