    A three day tripartite conference on National Parks and Tourism opened in Kampala on Wednesday (24th September). The three nations, Congo Democratic Republic, Rwanda, and Uganda share National Parks on their common borders. Among the issues discussed at the conference were the enforcement of Park security and management, Park research, and the promotion of tourism within the parks. All of the delegations to the conference agreed that a consultative machinery to co-ordinate activities should be established and that particular attention should be given to the problems of border formalities.

    SYNOPSIS: The International Conference Centre in Kampala, Uganda, was the site of a three day conferences on co-ordinating National Parks and Tourism between Uganda, Rwanda, and the Congo Democratic Republic. The meetings opened on Wednesday. The three nations share National Parks on their common borders and they are meeting to discuss such issues as Park security, management and research. Another important concern of the delegates is the expansion of tourism in the National Park areas. The parks are one of the most beautiful attractions in the world and flora and fauna abound. The nations are hopeful that the logistics of crossing the borders by visitors can be simplified so that the profitable tourist industry will flourish.

    Uganda Minister of Cultura, Mr. Engura, read the opening statement which was prepared by Ugandan Minister of Commerce, Industry, and tourism, Mr. Wilson Lutara. Mr. Engura said that the goal of the conference was co-operation between the three nations for mutual benefit. He told the delegations that ranger forces would have to be made more affective in catching poachers and that wild-life research activities would have to be co-ordinated.

    Observers from Burundi and Kenya were also present at the conference which was sponsored by the Ugandan government, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation and the Belgian airline Sabena, which serves all three countries.
