Hundreds of villagers living near the Taal volcano in the southern Philippines have been evacuated form their homes as the volcano threatens a major eruption.

SYNOPSIS: The volcano, which is one of the most active in the philippines, began showing signs of a major eruption last week. It last erupted in 1970, causing some damage but no casualties. In 1965 there was a major explosion in which 188 people were killed. The earliest records show 29 eruptions on Taal in 1572. It erupted again several times in the 18th century, but then remained dormant until 1873, and was active again early this century.

Last Friday (3 September), hundreds of villagers living near the volcano fled across Lake Taal to safety on the mainland as the volcano spewed ashes and dust. The lake itself was formed by the 1965 explosion. Villagers use small outrigger canoes to transport their belongings to safety on the mainland. only a handful of men decided to remain on the island.

The evacuees are being housed in temporary accommodation set up in towns away from the danger zone. Elementary schools and other public buildings are being used are being given medical examinations and aid, are being provided with food rations.

They've been advised by officials not to return to their homes because of the danger of an explosion.

However, there have been reports that several dozen villagers had returned to Taal despite the warnings by experts to stay away, saying they were unhappy with the hastily-constructed evacuation centres on the mainland. They say the current eruptions could continue for some time.
