  • Description

THE BANQUETING HALL IN WHITEHALL, WITH ITS RUBENS CEILING PANELS, HAS HAD THE TWENTIETH CENTURY GRIME WASHED OFF TO REVEAL ITS ORIGINAL GLORY, BEFORE BEING REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC. CHARLES I COMMISSIONED RUBENS TO GLORIFY HIS FATHER'S REIGN -- AND THE ARTIST RESPONDED BY PRODUCING A MASTERPIECE REGARDED AS THE FINEST PAINTED CEILING IN NORTHERN EUROPE.

THE BANQUETING HOUSE IN WHITEHALL OPENED TO THE PUBLIC TODAY 23 SEPTEMBER FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND LAST NIGHT RECEPTION HELD BY THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC BUILDING LAND WORKS TO MARK THE OPENING
EARL MOUNTBATTEN OF BURMA WAS ONE OF THE MANY PEERS OF THE REALM ON THE GUEST LIST AND SIR BASIL SPENCE, ARCHITECT OF COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, WAS AMONG THE ARTS REPRESENTATIVES.

LORD THOMPSON OF FLEET CAME FROM THE EVER-GROWING WORLD OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS; AS DID THE EDITOR OF THIS PROGRAMME, MR. AND MRS. A.C. FLETCHER, AND LORD HILL, CHAIRMAN OF I.T.A. THEY WERE ALL CELEBRATING THE RE-BIRTH OF A BUILDING DESIGNED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY FOR JAMES THE FIRST BY INIGO JONES. THE CEILING WAS PRINTED BY RUBENS OVER FIVE YEARS. THE BANQUETING HOUSE WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT FOR CEREMONIES AND PAGEANTS; AFTER THREE CENTURIES IN THE THICK OF HISTORY, IT NOW HAS A MODERN VERSION OF ITS ORIGINAL ROLE. IT WILL BE USED FOR GOVERNMENT RECEPTIONS AND NON-PROFIT-MAKING CONCERTS.
