  • Description

RESCUE TEAMS HAVE TOILED ACROSS DEEP SNOW COVERING MONTE MATTO SEARCHING FOR TRACES OF THE CRASHED COMET OWNED BY KIND SAUD OF SAUDI ARABIA. DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS THEY HAVE UNCOVERED EVIDENCE OF THE CRASH, INCLUDING A WING AND THE TAIL-PLANE. FOR SOME WEEKS PAST SMALL ITEMS OBVIOUSLY CONNECTED WITH THE CRASH HAVE COME TO LIGHT: PAGES FROM A COMET 4 OPERATIONS MANUAL, GLASS WOOL USED IN INSULATING PARTS OF THE AIRCRAFT, AS WELL AS TWO BODIES DISCOVERED BY POLICE ON 1ST MAY.

THE COMET CRASHED ON MARCH 20 WITH 18 PEOPLE ABOARD FLYING MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL HOUSEHOLD FROM GENEVA TO NICE. IT SMASHED INTO THE SIDE OF MONTE MATTO, KNOWN AS THE 'MAD MOUNTAIN', 6,000 FEET UP IN AN ALMOST INACCESSIBLE POSITION. AT FIRST, BLIZZARDS MADE RESCUE OPERATIONS IMPOSSIBLE; THEN, AVALANCHES THREATENED CLIMBERS.

GENERAL MORBIDELLA, PRESIDENT OF THE COMMITTEE INVESTIGATING THE CRASH, SAID IN MILAN YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) THAT THE CRASH HAD OCCURRED BECAUSE OF A HUMAN MISTAKE, AND NOT BECAUSE OF SABOTAGE. HE SAID THE POSITION AND CONDITION OF THE WRECKAGE, WHICH SPLIT INTO SEVERAL PIECES, CONFIRMED THE THEORY THAT THE COMET 4 WAS FLYING TOO LOW.
