    EUROPE'S ATHLETES FINISHED STRONGLY LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) TO BEAT THE AMERICA'S TEAM IN THEIR TWO-DAY ATHLETICS MEETING IN MONTREAL. EUROPE WON BY 169 POINTS TO 155.

    BOTH THE MEN AND WOMEN STARS OF EUROPE WERE AHEAD WHEN THE FIRST MEETING OF THE TWO HEMISPHERES CAME TO A CLOSE AT MONTREAL'S 25,000-SEAT EXPO STADIUM. THE MEN HAD 109 POINTS AGAINST 100 FOR THE AMERICAS' MEN AND THE EUROPEAN GIRLS SCORED 60 POINTS TO THE AMERICAS' 55.

    AFTER THE FIRST DAY OF THE EVENT THE AMERICA'S TEAM HAD BUILT UP A FIVE POINT LEAD. BUT A DAMP AND SOGGY EVENING SEEMED TO HAVE ITS EFFECT NOT ONLY ON ATTENDANCE BUT ALSO THE PERFORMANCE OF THE ATHLETES.

    BUT THERE WERE SOME SPECTACULAR RACES AND WINS, ONE WAS PROVIDED BY WYOMIA TYUS, OF THE UNITED STATES, WHO WON THE WOMEN'S 100 METRES IN FLYING STYLE WITH A TIME OF 11.3 SECONDS.

    LONG JUMP WORLD RECORD HOLDER RALPH BOSTON OF THE UNITED STATES WAS BEATEN INTO THIRD PLACE BY BOB BEAMAN, ALSO OF THE UNITED STATES AND LYNN DAVIES, OF GREAT BRITAIN. BEAMAN RECORDED A JUMP OF 26 FT 4 1/2 IN. (8.039 METRES) TO WIN.

    HUNGARY TOOK THE FIRST TWO PLACES IN THE MEN'S JAVELIN WITH UNITED STATES IN THIRD AND FOURTH POSITIONS.

    THE 10,000 METRES PROVIDED AN EASY RUN FOR JURGEN HASSE OF EAST GERMANY WHO WON IN 29 MINS 05.4 SECS -- HALF A LAP IN FRONT OF JUAN MARTINEZ OF MEXICO.
