Background: An American speed boat driver, Joe Fielder, was seriously injured on Saturday (November 28) when his boat became out of control during the World Outboard Championship Race at Lake Havasu, Arizona.

Fielder was among the leaders when the nose of his boat dipped beneath the water line. He was thrown into the water, and emerged at the surface close to the path of oncoming boats. His boat was travelling at around 90 miles an hour (145 k.m.) at the time of the mishap.

Twenty five thousand spectators were watching the race when Fielder's boat became out of control. He suffered a broken back, and was brought ashore by a rescue craft.
