  • Description

WEST GERMANY FOREIGN MINISTER, WILLY BRANDT, RECEIVED ROUGH HANDLING FROM ANGRY STUDENTS IN NUREMBERG YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). HERR BRANDT WAS STRUCK ON THE HEAD WITH AN UMBRELLA AS HE RAN THE GAUNTLET OF A JOSTLING CROWD OUTSIDE THE HALL WHERE HIS SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY (S.P.D.) OPENED ITS BEINNIAL NATIONAL CONGRESS.

THE ALL GERMAN AFFAIRS MINISTER, HERBERT WEHNER, LOST HIS SPECTACLES AS THE TWO MEN FORCED THEIR WAY INTO THE CONGRESS HALL. THE DEMONSTRATORS, SOME OF THEM WAVING VIET CONG FLAGS, WERE PROTESTING AT LAST FRIDAY'S EXPULSION OF TWO SPD PARTY MEMBERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN AN ANTI-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATION IN WEST BERLIN. THE DEMONSTRATORS TRIED REPEATEDLY TO PUSH THEIR WAY INTO THE HALL, SMASHED SEVERAL WINDOWS AND LIT FIRES. THEY WERE LATER DISPERSED BY RIOT POLICE.

INSIDE THE HALL, HERR BRANDT URGED RECOGNITION OF THE DISPUTED ODER-NEISSE LINE SEPARATING EAST GERMANY AND POLAND. BY USING THE WORD "RECOGNITION" HERR BRANDT WENT FURTHER THAN ANY PREVIOUS WEST GERMAN CABINET MINISTER TOWARDS PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE OF THE FRONTIER, WHICH PUTS A THIRD OF THE PRE WAR GERMAN REICH INSIDE POLAND AND THE SOVIET UNION.
