The President of India, Dr.Servapalli Radhakrishnan, has received assurances that the United States will help repel any more invasions of India by the Chinese.The U.S.said it would provide friendship and assistance.
This was the essence of a communique issued by Dr.Radhakrishnan after two days of talks with President Kennedy during a three-day state visit.
Dr.Radhakrishnan's visit was climaxed by participation on a meeting of the World Food Congress held in Washington under the auspices of the United Nations Food Agriculture Organization.
Both he and Mr.Kennedy spoke.Mr.Kennedy said that it would be a disgrace if this generation failed to use its knowledge and resources to end hunger in the world.
Dr.Radhakrishnan said that hunger lies at the root of the social upheaval an unrest in the world.He called on the World Food Congress to rouse the conscience of humanity to the need of starving millions.Otherwise, he said, the failure to do so would indicate humanity's deficiency of love and compassion for starving people.
After the appearance at the World Food Congress, Mr.Kennedy was Dr.Radhakrishnan's luncheon guest at Blair House, the official residence opposite the White House in Washington for important guests of state.
After lunch, Mr.Kennedy accompanied the Indian president on a parade through downtown Washington.Both presidents rode side by side in Mr.Kennedy's open car from Blair House down through the historic downtown section of Washington.Thousands of Washingtonians cheered the Indian president under a sunny sky.When it was all over, Mr.Kennedy dropped his guest off at Blair House and then returned to the White House.
