  • Description

A one-month seminar for English-speaking African trade unionists was opened in the University of Lagos on Monday (July 5).

Organised in conjunction with the Canadian Labour Congress Human Resources Development Programme, this is the first of a series of seminars planned for African trade union leaders this year. A similar project for French speaking Africans is to be held in Dakar in October. The seminars are designed to familiarise students with traditional trade union problems, and to deal with the organisation and functions of cooperatives and credit unions in developing countries.

Thirty delegates from Botswana, Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, Kenya, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and host country Nigeria, are attending the Lagos seminar. Two Canadian labour experts will be among their principal speakers.

SYNOPSIS: A one-month seminar for English speaking African trade unionists opened in Lagos University on Secretary for Labour, Mr. S.O. Koku, is acting as chairman.

Thirty students from twelve African countries are participating in the project, which is designed to familiarise them with traditional union problems, and the organisation and function of cooperatives in developing countries.

The seminar is being sponsored jointly by the Canadian Labour Congress and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. It is the first of a series planned for this year, and French-speaking Africans will be holding a similar venture in Dakar in October.

Among the speakers on Monday was Professor E.A. Tugbiyele, the Director of the University's Continuing Education Centre. He said that trade unions in the advanced countries occupied a unique position. But properly organised, they could, he maintained, play even more decisive roles in Africa.
